OMG! I love “Derry Girls”. They appeared suddenly last year on Netflix with only six episodes, leaving me desperately wanting more. Now, Netflix has dropped the second season! The show is a ’90s-era sitcom set in Derry, Northern Ireland, centering around schoolgirl Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), cousin Orla (Louisa Harland), friends Clare (Nicola Coughlan) and Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell), and poor James (Dylan Llewellyn) who is Michelle’s English cousin. Being English in this situation is not a plus, given the troubled situation between the English and Irish, Catholics and Protestants. Still, despite the tense political situation, the girls are girls and trying to live their lives the best they can, dealing with parents and obnoxious classmates, often with hilarious results. The Head Mistress Sister Michael (Siobhan McSweeney) especially cracks me up with her eye rolls and “over it” attitude, far from being motherly towards her kids.
Anyhow, best to take one episode at a time instead of binging. It’s like eating a whole cake and then being sorry it’s all gone.
